Tesco recalls popular croissants that could be lethal to nut allergy sufferers

Tesco is recalling some frozen croissants over fears they contain a totally different product - that could prove deadly.

The supermarket said its 6-packs of frozen all butter croissants may actually contain a different item, almond croissants.

Almonds can trigger allergic reactions in up to 330,000 people in the UK, or 0.5% of the population. These reactions can range from mild to lethal.

A statement by the Food Standards Agency said: "Due to a packaging error some packs may have been incorrectly packed with Tesco frozen almond croissants, which contain almonds (nuts). This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to almonds (nuts)."

Affected packets of Tesco croissants have September 2022 best before dates.

Tesco said: "Please do not consume this product if you have an allergy to almond, return the affected product to store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required.

"Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused. "

The supermarket is also putting up signs in stores letting customers know, and is contacting allergy support organisations.

Last week The Mirror reported that Lidl is recalling two products advertised as being gluten-free because they may actually contain gluten.

The Northern Ireland branch of Lidl is recalling its Just Free Gluten Free black and white puddings over the issue.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains that many people are allergic to.

The FSA said: "These products contain, or may contain gluten making them a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to gluten."

The FSA is advising customers with gluten allergies or intolerances not to eat the items, with have a use-by date of May 20.
