A teenager allegedly behind the wheel during a fatal crash that killed one teen and injured another five has been charged with a string of driving offences.

The crash occurred on June 2 on the Stuart Highway after a stolen vehicle's occupants tried to provoke officers by throwing a hammer and other objects that damaged a patrol car at Katherine, according to Northern Territory Police.

A 16-year-old boy died at the crash scene despite the efforts of paramedics to save him.

Three injured 14-year-olds - two boys and a girl - were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Officers later found two other girls - also believed to have been in the car - in nearby bushland and they were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Acting NT Police Commander Mark Grieve previously described the incident as tragic and complex.

"Certainly parental responsibility comes to the fore and socio-economic issues," he told reporters on the day of the crash.

"We are investigating a significant series of offences, as well as the death of a 16-year-old male following extremely dangerous driving behaviour that placed the lives of the community at risk."

Police arrested a 16-year-old on Friday and he was charged with numerous driving offences including causing death, endangering life and dangerous driving.

He was remanded in custody to appear in court on Monday.
