Swansea City's Ollie Cooper will now travel with Wales World Cup squad as uncapped star put on standby

Swansea City midfielder Ollie Cooper is now set to travel with the Wales squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form for the Swans in the Championship this season, and his omission from Rob Page's initial 26-man squad was arguably one of the biggest talking points.

Cooper hasn't yet received a senior cap for his country, but his boss Russell Martin was one of several high-profile voices calling for him to be given the chance to pull on the red jersey this winter.

And, after initially being overlooked, he is now set to join Birmingham City's Jordan James in travelling with the rest of the team to Qatar, with Page keen to give the country's next generation of talent a flavour of an international tournament.

Fulham youngster Luke Harris had also been set to travel, but has now pulled out due to personal reasons.

The decision comes after Swans boss Martin had previously expressed his surprise at the decision not to take Cooper, who has three goals and one assist in 15 Championship games to his name this season. "I'm really gutted for Ollie. Just really disappointed. Really disappointed," Martin said ahead of this weekend's trip to Huddersfield Town. If I was Wales manager he'd be going. If you look at the squad, does he deserve to go on merit and performance, without naming any individuals, over other players in the squad? Then yeah. I would say so. But I'm not the Wales manager.

"There will be a load of Wales fans breathing a sigh of relief that I'm not the Wales manager. But I can't really comment on why he's not in the squad. If I was Wales manager, would he go? 100 per cent."

Cooper will be joined by fellow Swans stars Joe Allen and Ben Cabango out in Qatar, with Wales set to take on the USA in their first game on November 21.
