Sega is having a fantastic run with Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, with the game bringing in some impressive numbers just a month into its release. According to the Sega Japan website, the game has sold over 1 million copies worldwide. The game has earned praise from both critics and fans alike, with a Metacritic User Score of 9.0 and a critic score of 82.
The Hype Is Paying Off
I was straightaway impressed with Sonic Racing CrossWorlds during my first impressions, so it’s not much of a surprise that most people who’ve played it are enjoying it. The free update that added Joker from Persona 5 as a playable character is also out, which should be bringing in even more players. Sega has also added new tracks that come straight from Persona 5. In case you’re not familiar with the JRPG, it has some incredible music, so this is a very welcome addition. You also get the new Arsène Wing vehicle, perfectly tailored to Joker.
These numbers are even more impressive when you realize there’s no Switch 2 port as of yet. It’s the perfect game to succeed on that platform, so expect sales figures to climb even higher when the port comes out. But if Sega truly wants this game to have a long lifespan, they need to commit to the promises they’re making with updates. So far, they haven’t faltered a bit, but we’ll see how things turn out in the next couple of months.
In case you’re wondering, Mario Kart World sold over 5 million units in the same timeframe, according to Nintendo. Now, you do have to factor in that it was a launch title for Nintendo Switch 2, and a lot of people bought it in a bundle with the Switch 2. Nintendo’s kart racer is still more popular, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise — it is Mario after all.
