Sir Ian McKellen surprises Liverpool students with visit

Sir Ian McKellen surprised a group of students as he stopped by the Liverpool Guild of Students.

The actor is currently starring in Mother Goose at the Liverpool Empire alongside comedian John Bishop. The pair have received rave reviews from theatregoers but their presence in and around the Liverpool city centre hasn't gone unnoticed by fans.

Taking to Twitter to hopefully have a run-in with Sir Ian, the Liverpool Guild of Students sent out a public request to seat the legendary Lord of the Rings actor.

Their tweet said: "Petition to Get Gandalf to the Guild. To celebrate Ian McKellen Day on Friday March 3, we want to formally invite Sir Ian, and John, down for a pint or a latte and jacket potato, or whatever you fancy … Let’s get Gandalf to the Guild again."

The request was sent out on March 1 but within 48 hours, Sir Ian was already a customer. The 83-year-old kept his identity ironically hidden with a mask of his own face while wrapped in a large black trench coat and farmer's cap.

Ecstatic with the development, the guild shared a photo of Sir Ian smiling in their venue. Their caption said: "#GetGandalf2theGuild mission accomplished. A magical flying visit from @ianmckellen himself on Ian McKellen Day. Our work here is done."

"Ian McKellen Day" is in reference to the first time the actor stopped by the guild in 2017. The venue erected a plaque to honour the occasion, which is next to where he sat today, with engraved text that said: "Sir Ian McKellen sat here on table five and enjoyed a jacket potato and a latte."
