Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers promotion fortunes tipped as season nears end

The League One campaign is nearing its climax and there are still scenarios at the top and bottom of the table which require a resolution.

The third tier of English football is approaching the final month of regular action and the questions of which teams will be automatically promoted, finish in the play-offs and be relegated to League Two will soon be answered.

Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic are the current top two, while MK Dons, Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle are in the play-off spots.

Several other teams including Sunderland, Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers are members of the chasing pack, while there is an intense battle to beat the drop to League Two at the other end of the table.

Throughout the campaign, football statistics website FiveThirtyEight is forecasting how the League One table might finish after the results of every matchday, with the season reaching the climax of the regular season at the end of April before the play-offs start.

And as things stand, the Latics are being tipped to end the season as champions and will be joined in the automatic promotion spots by Rotherham.

The play-offs are predicted to be contested by MK Dons, Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford, with Sunderland missing out, as well as Wycombe Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Portsmouth.

Wanderers meanwhile are tipped to end the season in 11th, the position they currently occupy, and have less than a one per cent chance of being promoted according to the calculations.

At the other end of the table, AFC Wimbledon, Morecambe, Doncaster Rovers and Crewe Alexandra are being tipped for relegation to League Two.
