The 2025 Emmys kicked off in Los Angeles today, and like every year prior, it was the little moments in between the big wins that really stole the show.
Severance, The White Lotus, and The Studio were the most-nominated shows at this year’s ceremony (see the full list of winners HERE), but here’s all the other bits and bobs you might’ve missed as TV’s brightest stars descended on Peacock Theatre earlier today.
Britt Lower drops a Severance Easter egg
Severance got their innies in a twist when Britt Lower, who plays Helly R/Helena (depending on the day, and sometimes both at once) not only collected the award for best lead actress in a drama, but dropped a reference to the show during her acceptance speech.
Scrawled on the back of her speech were the words, “Let me out.” Fans know that’s a callback to her character’s escape plan back in season one, but a slight part of me fears that Lumon somehow severed Lower herself. Kier Eagan, you will pay!
Two Emmy milestones reached
Severance star Tramell Tillman made Emmys history today when he became the first Black man to ever win best supporting actor in a drama series. If that wasn’t heartwarming enough, Tillman — who plays my onscreen crush Milchick — dedicated his win to his mum. Gah!
Owen Cooper also nabbed an Emmys landmark, becoming the ceremony’s youngest-ever male winner in any acting category. He collected the trophy for his starring role in Netflix’s Adolescence, and he too gave a shoutout to his parents on stage.
Stephen Colbert goes job hunting
Recently axed late night host Stephen Colbert was greeted to a standing ovation when he took to the stage to present the first award of the night. While there, he hilariously asked if “anyone is hiring” — so let’s all pray he somehow winds up on The Bear.
THEE Gilmore Girls reunite
Years after their show wrapped up, Gilmore Girls stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel reunited as presenters on Emmys night. They waxed lyrical about their time on the nostalgic dramedy, including memories about having a very small budget, especially compared to ER.
An awkward Elizabeth Banks moment
Pitch Perfect star Elizabeth Banks deservedly gave a shoutout to all the female nominees while presenting the award for best directing in a limited series. However, all her support was for nought when the category’s only male nominee, Adolescence’s Philip Barantini, ultimately won the award. Yikes.
Mother reckons she deserves another award
Despite not being nominated this year (RIP, Tanya McQuoid), Jennifer Coolidge said she still deserved a gong for her (non-existent) role in The Pitt as a “horny grandmother having a colonoscopy during a power outage”. Side note: that’s also the title of my memoir.
Celebs call for a ceasefire
Underpinning the entire ceremony was the voices of a few attendees who advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza. Meg Stalter wore a purse with the words “CEASE FIRE!”, Javier Bardem wore a Palestinian keffiyeh, and Natasha Rothwell and Hannah Einbinder wore red Artists4Ceasefire pins.

So there you have it folks, another Emmys year done and dusted. I’ll admit I’m quite late to the ceremony’s biggest winners (Adolescence, The Studio and The Pitt), but I doubt any of them compare to what happens whenever Coolidge is given a microphone.
