Saudi Arabian Grand Prix: preview

Unfolding on F1's fastest street circuit, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was one of the three races that Max Verstappen wasn't able to win last year, and as such it's taken on additional significance for the 2024 season, both for the reigning champion and the rest of the grid.

The Dutchman, who won last week's season-opener by 22 seconds, endured a nightmare qualifying session hampered by technical issues last time out at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, yet he still managed to recover from 15th to 2nd. Sergio Perez capitalised on his teammate's bad luck, though he can't count on getting such a generous headstart, if any, this weekend.

Red Bull's one-two gives them a 17-point lead over Ferrari, who had mixed results last weekend. Carlos Sainz finished less than three seconds behind Perez to take a surprise podium, though Charles Leclerc dropped from 2nd to 4th after multiple lock-ups.

It was a decent start for McLaren and Mercedes, though cooling issues and a late error hurt George Russell, while Alpine are already in crisis mode, and have parted with technical director Matt Harman and head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer.
