Russia and Ukraine agree to fragile ceasefire during religious holiday

  • Russia's president Vladimir Putin announced a 32-hour ceasefire for Orthodox Easter celebrations.
  • Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Kyiv would abide by the measure, noting Ukraine had previously proposed a halt to fighting for the holiday.
  • The ceasefire is scheduled to be in effect from Saturday at 4pm (1300 GMT) until midnight (2100 GMT) on Sunday evening.
  • The Kremlin instructed Russian forces to cease military action during this period but remain prepared for any provocations by the enemy.
  • The announcement follows a similar 30-hour ceasefire ordered last year, which both sides subsequently accused each other of violating.
