Robert De Niro praises Leonardo DiCaprio's talent and future potential

Robert De Niro looking into camera

In the world of cinema, certain actors leave an indelible mark on their fellow performers. Such is the case with the legendary Robert De Niro and the immensely talented Leonardo DiCaprio. Their paths first crossed over three decades ago on the set of the 1993 film 'This Boy's Life,' where DiCaprio made quite an impression on De Niro.

At the time, De Niro, a two-time Academy Award winner, was already an established name in the industry. DiCaprio, on the other hand, was best known for his role in the ABC sitcom 'Growing Pains.' When he came in to read for a role in 'This Boy's Life,' De Niro noticed something special about the young actor.

'I said to Art Linson, the producer, I said, 'Art, that kid was really, it was interesting.' I didn't push it. I just said, 'That kid had something special,' and then they turned around and wound up using Leo,' De Niro recalls in an interview with PEOPLE magazine.

In 'This Boy's Life,' DiCaprio plays the 15-year-old Tobias, a character based on Tobias Wolff's memoir. The story revolves around Caroline, Tobias' single mother, played by Ellen Barkin, who moves the family to Washington state and becomes involved with a man named Dwight Hansen (played by De Niro). As the film progresses, Hansen's darker and more abusive side is revealed, particularly towards the young Tobias.

Their collaboration continued years later when both actors appeared in the 1996 drama 'Marvin's Room' alongside Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. But it is their latest venture, 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' that has grabbed the attention of audiences and critics alike. The film tells the heartbreaking true story of the Osage Reign of Terror in 1920s Oklahoma, where De Niro portrays a seemingly-benevolent man named William Hale orchestrating the murders of Indigenous people for their valuable land.

In this film, DiCaprio takes on the role of Hale's simple-minded nephew, Ernest, who marries an Osage woman played by Lily Gladstone. Hale's nefarious plans put Ernest's wife in jeopardy, adding tension and drama to the storyline.

When asked about his character in 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' De Niro reflects on the complexity of evil. Hale, though deeply villainous, does not view his actions as such. De Niro describes him as one of the most insidious characters he has portrayed, someone who appears to be a respected member of the community but secretly engages in heinous acts.

With 'Killers of the Flower Moon' garnering significant attention, it has received an impressive ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese, Best Actress for Lily Gladstone, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro.

This nomination marks De Niro's eighth acting Oscar nomination, solidifying his place among the elite group of performers with eight or more acting nominations. It is a testament to his unmatched talent and contribution to the world of cinema.

For fans eager to watch 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' the film is now available for streaming on Apple TV+. It promises to captivate audiences with its captivating storyline, outstanding performances, and powerful message.

The collaboration between Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio continues to evolve, showcasing their incredible abilities as actors while leaving a lasting impact on the world of film. As these two icons come together once again, fans can anticipate yet another captivating and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
