Rams sign QB Case Cookus, C Cole Toner to practice squad

We’ve gotten our first sign that Matthew Stafford and/or John Wolford may not be able to play on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Los Angeles Rams announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed quarterback Case Cookus to the practice squad, along with center Cole Toner.

Stafford is being evaluated for a concussion after leaving Sunday’s game in New Orleans. Wolford missed the game with a neck injury, which he suffered in Week 10 when he started in place of Stafford. Bryce Perkins replaced Stafford against the Saints this past week.

Cookus, who’s from Thousand Oaks, came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and has had stints with the Giants, Broncos, Vikings and Raiders since then. He was last on an NFL roster in August of 2021 but was cut by the Raiders before the season began. Since then, he spent five days in the CFL with the Edmonton Elks and was recently drafted into the USFL by the Philadelphia Stars.

Toner was a fifth-round pick by the Cardinals back in 2016 and has played 14 games in his NFL career. He was last with the Texans in 2021, playing and starting one game.
