Queen of the South boss aims to get back to winning ways against Kilmarnock

Queen of the South boss Wullie Gibson wants to get back to winning ways in the Doonhamers’ battle to beat the drop.

But he is well aware his side will face one of their toughest tests this weekend when they travel to Rugby Park to take on Kilmarnock.

After four games unbeaten since taking on the managerial role, Gibson has suffered two defeats and is desperate for three points.

He said: “We’ve got to dust ourselves down and look forward to Kilmarnock at the weekend and that’s going to be another huge test for us.

“We’ve been up there earlier in the season and it was 4-0 and it could’ve been more that day.

“But we’ll go there and work hard this week on our team and our system and hopefully get a positive result.”

Queens could be boosted with some positive injury news this week.

Lee Connelly, who has been out with a knee injury, and Harry Cochrane, who has been sidelined since December with an ankle knock, were due to return to training this week.

There was more good news on the injury front too.

Gibson said: “Lee and Harry have been doing non-contact to start with but to get them back out with the boys will be a massive boost.

“Ben Liddle isn’t too far away either so the three of them will be healthy additions when they’re back fit for us.”

Two players the club are taking their time with are Udoka Chima and Calvin McGrory. With the business end of the season approaching the club want to be careful not to rush players back too early.

Wullie said: “With Udoka Chima it’s just his conditioning but he’s been out for five months with a thigh injury and that takes a toll.

“He works hard but he needs to work even harder to get that match fitness because where we are in the season if we need boys to come in they need to be ready.

“Calvin’s knee injury still hasn’t settled down and we just need to take it a day at a time and see how he reacts to treatment but there hasn’t been much progress. If someone said to me we could get him back this week that would be excellent but it is what it is and we’ve got to get them back when they’re ready.

“There’s no point in taking any risk and have them breaking down.

“It’s down to the nitty gritty now and we need everybody fit and ready.”
