Well the day has finally come. The Golden Trio has been cast for the HBO Harry Potter series and already it is a mess of people trying to analyze these children. Who are already going to be part of a show that is surrounded by negativity.
The series, which is coming out after J.K. Rowling has used her millions to attack the trans community for years, is set to bring a more “accurate” take on the series to life. Which brings with it a whole bunch of questions. Like is Hermione’s determination to free the house elves with S.P.E.W. going to be a part of the show? How is this all going to look with Paapa Essiedu’s Snape being Muggle racist towards Hermione Granger?
Whatever actually happens with the show, one thing is true: We have to protect these kids. It was announced that Dominic McLaughlin would bring Harry Potter to life, former Matilda the Musical star Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout is going to be Ron Weasley. Which we knew that younger actors would be playing the Golden Trio but the news comes with a sour note.
Those of us who do not support J.K. Rowling’s transphobic views do not want to watch the series or give Rowling’s pockets more money. Which mean that the show as a whole is going to have a lot less open-hearted viewers watching it. And as is the way with fandom projects, that tends to mean the louder, grosser fans are going to be louder.
While the adults of this show know that they are tying themselves to Rowling and her views, intentional or not, these kids are not aware of what is going on. Or even if they are, they’re too young to really push back. So it is important that people do protect these kids who will forever be linked to the Harry Potter franchise now, for better or worse. I hope that there is a lot of support for these three and let’s keep them away from social media.
