VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam, has been awarded the Dr BR Ambedkar Chair by the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment.
The IIM-V is the only IIM in the country to get this Chair.
Apart from the one-time grant, this Chair scheme has provision for the position of one full professor, one assistant professor and two doctoral scholars. The said Chair would serve as a knowledge centre to advance studies and research to disseminate and implement ideas and thoughts of Dr BR Ambedkar.
IIM-Visakhapatnam recently entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Dr Ambedkar Foundation of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the Chair.
Speaking to TOI, director, IIM-Visakhapatnam, Prof M Chandrasekhar said that the MoU envisages establishing at IIM Visakhapatnam, the Dr Ambedkar Chair in public policy, economics and social sciences. “The Chair would promote the economic policies and principles of Dr Ambedkar. In addition, the research agenda of the Chair at the Institute shall be to delve into the role of access to health and its role in social justice,” said Prof Chandrasekhar.
The director added that one of the objectives of IIM-V, as enshrined in the IIM Act, is to carry out research that enhances inclusive, equitable, and sustainable national development goals. “The research shall also support and develop programs promoting social and gender equity. I expect this Chair to help IIM-V in advancing these objectives with an actionable agenda,” said Prof Chandrasekhar.
