Popular Halloween treat recalled ahead of spooky season amid 'life threatening' allergen risk

Zingerman’s Candy Manufacturers are recalling two of their products amid concerns of undeclared cashews and peanuts.

According to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the Michigan-based brand is urging customers to return their purchases to avoid any risk of harm to individuals with allergies who may consume the products.

Just one day before Halloween, the manufacturers are urgently trying to ensure that the candies aren’t given out to trick-or-treaters due to the undeclared allergens.

According to the FDA, the chocolate was distributed in Michigan and New York; however, Londoners should also be aware of the recall in case the chocolate was recently brought across the pond in people’s luggage.

The recall states that Peanut Butter Crush Bars containing cashews were distributed without the packaging clearly identifying the ingredient. Additionally, the brand’s Cashew Cow Bars failed to list peanuts on their labels.

“Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the production and packaging processes. Steps have been taken to ensure this problem has been resolved,” the report states.

“Consumers who have purchased Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory Peanut Butter Crush or Cashew Cow Bars from Lot# 174250 should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions should contact Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory at 877-632-9264.”

According to the FDA: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews or peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

The announcement comes just one day before Halloween, which is widely celebrated across the world with kids trick-or-treating at nearby houses.

Luckily, no illnesses have been reported so far.

Over at the UK’s Food Standards Agency, a recall has not been announced for the US chocolate bar, but several other products have received a notification about a recall.

This includes Rose Manufacturing, which has recalled its Halloween Spooky Tea Cakes in Northern Ireland over the undisclosed egg ingredient, and Aldi who recently announced a recall for PANATAS Part-Baked 6 pack custard tarts.

Halloween can often be a significant concern for parents whose children are allergic to ingredients commonly found in Halloween snacks, so keeping an eye on product recalls can be a handy way to stay informed.

According to the organisation Healthy Children, parents should also be aware that “fun-size” treats, which are often seen at Halloween, may sometimes include ingredients not commonly found in regular-sized counterparts. So, always be aware and double-check the ingredients, and if in doubt, encourage kids to politely turn down or swap the treats.
