Policeman charged over fatal NSW crash

A Sydney police officer was allegedly driving dangerously before his unmarked police car hit a minibus, killing the 76-year-old driver.

Local driver Andy Leonello died beside his damaged bus after it collided with the police car on May 24 in Llandilo, near Penrith.

"He is a remarkable man and has always been a cautious driver very respectful to other drivers on the road," long-time customer Penrith City Garden Club said in May.

Following a three-month critical incident investigation, police on Wednesday formally alleged the 40-year-old sergeant caused the crash.

The officer, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, is charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and a back-up charge of negligent driving occasioning death.

He is due to appear in Blacktown Local Court on October 18.
