Police launch investigation after Travelodge 'lift surfing' videos posted on YouTube

Police have launched an investigation after a series of hotel 'lift surfing' videos were posted on YouTube. Shared on a channel called RYEGI, the footage shows the inside of an elevator shaft and appears to have been filmed by someone sitting on top of the lift, said to be a Travelodge in Morecambe.

The footage was posted earlier this week and, at the time of writing, had been viewed 146 times, LancsLive reports. The YouTube channel describes the content as "Lift surfing, Skyscrapers, Urban Exploring and more."

Lancashire Constabulary has confirmed it is investigating the Morecambe incident. Enquiries are ongoing after damage was caused in the incident.

In the video, the YouTuber appears to film himself riding the lift down whist the automated voice can be heard in the background. The voice announces the doors opening, and that the lift will be going back up.

The lift rides the lift back up, before it cuts to the inside of the box. The lift then travels down three floors.

The description for the video reads: "In this video I injured my finger! LIFT SURFING IN MORECAMBE TRAVELODGE: This lift serves 5 floors.

"WARNING: Do NOT copy any activities you see in my videos. The dangers of lift surfing involve crushing, electrocution, entrapment, serious injury and death. There are many other significant dangers, those are just a few examples. Watching online videos will never show you the full extent of the dangers involved."

A spokesperson for Travelodge said: "We take the safety of our customers and staff extremely seriously and we have stringent lift security measures in place.

"The perpetrators in this VT have illegally gained entry into the lift shaft and we will be reporting this incident to the Police for further investigation.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary said: "We are investigating a burglary at the Morecambe Travel Lodge where an offender has entered the premises as a trespasser and forced their way through a lift shaft access door.

"The offender has filmed themselves riding on the roof of the lift. Damage was caused and enquiries are ongoing."
