'Pokémon Winds and Waves': Fans Fear Massive Backlash if AI Is Used in Future Games

Artificial intelligence is often incorporated everywhere. In gaming, many fans oppose its use because it takes away creativity in exchange for quick development for game studios. Recently, some "Pokemon" fans questioned whether AI could become relevant in future games such as "Winds and Waves."

The conversation centered on several possibilities. These included AI-assisted Pokémon designs and translations. For some fans, the answer was simple. They would not buy the game.

One commenter said they would refuse to purchase a Pokémon title if AI were involved in its creative development. Others described generative AI as too controversial and warned that its use could create serious backlash across the Pokémon community.

AI-Generated Pokémon Designs Could Be a Major Issue

"Pokémon" designs are a core part of what makes the franchise recognizable.

Fans regularly analyze new Pokémon. They discuss their inspirations, visual concepts, abilities, names, and smaller design details. This connection could make AI-generated Pokémon especially controversial.

Several Reddit users said they would reject a game featuring AI-generated creative content. Some were more open to AI being used as a source of inspiration. However, they drew a clear line between using AI during brainstorming and allowing it to create content that ultimately appears in the finished game.

For these fans, the concern is not simply about the technology. It is about the role of human creativity in shaping Pokémon.

One commenter even suggested that an AI-assisted generation of Pokémon could become a major talking point around the franchise for years—just on the negative side of the spectrum.

Some Fans Would Accept AI Behind the Scenes

The discussion was not entirely opposed to artificial intelligence.

Some commenters made an important distinction between creative work and technical development. They argued that AI could potentially assist programmers with tasks such as coding, physics, balancing, or other development work.

Under that approach, human artists and writers would still control the creative direction.

Pokémon designs, artwork, stories, and other recognizable elements would remain human-made. AI would instead function as a development tool that works in the background.

For some fans, that distinction could make AI more acceptable.

Would Pokémon Fans Really Boycott an AI-Powered Game?

Whether fans would actually boycott a Pokémon game over AI remains uncertain. With "Winds and Waves" just a few months from launch, there are tons of possibilities that might change.

Some Reddit users believed the backlash would be limited to online discussions. They argued that people might criticize the decision publicly but still purchase the game once it was released.

Others expected a stronger reaction. They suggested that an AI controversy could lead to canceled preorders, boycotts, and criticism of the franchise.

There was also skepticism that AI-generated Pokémon designs would become reality in the first place. Some fans pointed to the amount of planning and creative development involved in designing Pokémon as evidence that fully AI-generated creatures would be unlikely.
