Peter Wright's world title defence falls short with third round exit

Livingston-born Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright was unable to defend his PDC World Championship title after he was dumped out in the third round by Kim Huybrechts.

The 52-year-old admitted he went into the clash ill-prepared and paid the price as he lost four straight sets to the 31st seed - eventually being eliminated thanks to a 4-1 loss.

The flamboyant ace had been looking to become the first Scot to seal a third world title but that’s on hold for another 12 months.

Speaking after the loss he said: “I didn’t have the right preparation coming here to be honest.

“I didn’t turn up at all. It just wasn’t the right preparation to try and defend the title. But I always have rubbish years and come back.

“I’m going to miss a lot of tournaments in 2023 because there’s so many and I’m getting older. I’ve got to pick my tournaments and just concentrate on the big ones.”
