Pep Guardiola talks up Kevin Muscat as he gives Rangers four key pointers

Yokomama F.Marinos boss Kevin Muscat has been heavily linked with the vacant Rangers managerial job.

The Australian, who lifted the J1 League last season, is thought to be one of the names in contention for the role.

Frank Lampard is another who has been linked with the position after the sacking of Michael Beale.

Muscat is highly thought of as a coach, as evidenced by comments from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola when the two sides met in a friendly over the summer.

The Champions League holders won the fixture 5-3 but the Spaniard had nothing but good things to say about the ex-Rangers player.

He said: "I say wow. I watched Yokohama and I like what I see. Maybe because we are in the same football group – the City Football Group – they are doing a very good job.

"Tomorrow will be so difficult for us because they are so aggressive.

"They are dynamic in their process, the build-up, everything they do. I like it. I say wow."

Meanwhile, Ally McCoist has slammed the state of Rangers with the Ibrox hero calling for a new manager to be brought in as soon as possible.

McCoist is unsure who he wants to see in the Ibrox hotseat, but he feels Rangers must get their decision right. He told the talkSPORT Breakfast Show: “It’s been carnage. It was poor last night – really, really poor. I watched it and we’re just going to have to change direction and get somebody in.

"I’m not sure, if I’m 100 per cent honest with you, because for three or four days I’ve been trying to keep in touch but I know they’ve interviewed one or two, Frank Lampard has been mentioned.

“But this time, 100 per cent, Rangers have got to get it right in terms of the next manager. You’ve got to be honest, it’s not been good enough by any stretch of the imagination.”
