Do you or does someone in your family own a Trek or Electra e-bike at this time? If that describes you, then you're going to want to know about a new recall filed with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. It was issued just a few days ago, on January 29, 2026, and concerns certain 2026 Trek FX+ 1 and Electra Townie Go! e-bikes (for those unfamiliar, Electra is part of the Trek brand family).
According to the recall, approximately 19,890 units are believed to be affected. All bikes concerned carry a model year of 2026, and were sold prior to October 28, 2025. Here's the full model list:
- Trek FX+ 1 Midstep
- Trek FX+ 1S Midstep
- Trek FX+ 1 Stepover
- Trek FX+1S Stepover
- Electra Townie Go! Step Thru
- Electra Townie Go! Step Thru
The issue prompting this recall relates to a faulty rear wheel bolt, which may possibly break when torqued due to "hydrogen embrittlement," according to the recall letter being sent to registered owners. This could, in turn, cause the rear wheel to separate, which could cause a fall hazard and/or injury.
The company that manufactures both the Trek and Electra bikes, Hyena, advises owners to immediately stop riding these e-bikes until they can have the issue repaired by an authorized Trek or Electra dealer. They will address the issue by installing a new rear wheel bolt (the replacement units are silver, where the faulty units are black).
To sweeten the deal, customers who participate in the recall service will receive a $10 in-store credit toward any Trek, Electra, or Bontrager merchandise they wish to purchase, in addition to receiving the recall repair service completely free of charge. This store credit will be valid through December 31, 2026.
So far, Hyena has received seven separate reports of rear wheel bolts breaking on some of the affected bikes, but no injuries have been reported at this time.
Owners may contact Trek Bicycles toll-free at 1-800-373-4594 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central from Monday through Friday, or through the company's recall website.
