Today’s techno-industrial world, of instant messaging, notifications and social media, is competitive and stressful. Studies show that anxiety disorders affect millions of individuals throughout the world. In fact, the prevalence of mental health issues seem to be increasing day-by-day. These are the time periods in which we truly realise importance of sacred texts like Bhagavad Gita. Bhagwan Krishna’s profound words helped Arjuna attain internal balance during the Mahabharata war and also in emerging out of it as a winner. In this article, we will explore one of the most powerful verses that Lord Krishna has gifted us in order to attain mental harmony and peace during times of hardships.
Powerful Bhagavad Gita Verse for Inner Peace
In chapter 2, Lord Krishna told Arjuna:
मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदु:खदा: |
आगमापायिनोऽनित्यास्तांस्तितिक्षस्व भारत || 14||
mātrā-sparśhās tu kaunteya śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino ’nityās tāns-titikṣhasva bhārata
“O son of Kunti, the contact between the senses and the sense objects gives rise to fleeting perceptions of happiness and distress. These are impermanent, and come and go like the winter and summer seasons. O descendent of Bharat, one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.”
Lord Krishna About Developing Non-Reactivity
Human beings are social animals. Hence, it is absolutely natural that senses should come into contact with sense objects. We cannot isolate ourselves in order to attain mastery over the mind. However, Bhagwan Krishna has reminded us a powerful truth that carries within it the key for ensuring inner harmony. This truth is the universal law of impermanence i.e., whatever that arises, passes. Nothing stays the same forever.
Realising this truth, we should remain non-reactive whenever sensual desires, cravings or aversions arise within our minds. It is the act of reacting that increases these feelings like wild fire. Instead we should become the observer. Focusing on the breath can significantly help us in grounding ourselves in the present moment firmly. Additionally, practice meditation everyday for strengthening focus and inner stability. We can meditate by maintaining an image of Lord Krishna in our minds. This method will connect our souls deeply with the Supreme energy of Bhagwan.
