A man has been charged with the manslaughter of a newborn baby boy after a tragic mix-up involving the neonatal medical gas outlet at a western Sydney hospital six years ago.
NSW police were notified of the baby's death after he died at a hospital in Bankstown on July 13, 2016.
A coronial inquest began last year into the circumstances surrounding the death, however, the matter was referred to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions during the inquiry for a review of the police brief of evidence.
The DPP provided advice to police leading to a 61-year-old man attending Bankstown Police Station on Monday.
The man was arrested and charged with manslaughter by criminal negligence and causing grievous bodily harm by a negligent act or omission.
It will be alleged in court the man failed to adhere to the Australia standards when certifying oxygen connections within the neonatal medical gas outlet at the hospital.
The man was refused bail and will appear at Bankstown Local Court on Monday.
