Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Noni Madueke from London rivals Chelsea.

The winger joins the Gunners as part of a deal that could eventually be worth £52million, with the initial fee understood to be around £48m.

Fans will have to wait a little longer to see Madueke in action as, due to playing for Chelsea at the Club World Cup this summer, he is owed time off and will link up with his new team-mates in August after the club’s Asia tour.

Madueke has signed a five-year contract with Arsenal, who believe they have secured a good deal in the current transfer market.

The England international becomes the club's fourth signing of the summer transfer window and will bolster Mikel Arteta's attacking options ahead of the new season.

"We're all so happy to welcome Noni Madueke to the team,” the Arsenal boss said.

Noni is an exciting and powerful young player ... one of the most talented wide forward players in the Premier League

Mikel Arteta on Noni Madueke

“Noni is an exciting and powerful young player, with his performances and numbers in recent seasons being of consistently high quality. He is one of the most talented wide forward players in the Premier League.

“At just 23, Noni already brings experience of club and international football, and he knows the Premier League very well. Having seen the quality of Noni’s performances up close in recent seasons, we’re really excited he is joining us.

“Noni joins our group with familiar England teammates and other players he knows. He will be made to feel at home straight away. His arrival will really improve our squad - we’re all thrilled to have him here. From all of us, welcome Noni and welcome to your family.”

Madueke's arrival takes Arsenal’s summer spending beyond the £100m mark, following deals for Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.

The 23-year-old played a key role for Chelsea last season, helping Enzo Maresca's side seal a top-four Premier League finish and win the Conference League. He was also part of the Club World Cup-winning squad, but left the camp on the eve of the final to undergo his Arsenal medical.

Negotiations between Arsenal and Chelsea were led by Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta, although Arteta is understood to have played a key role when selling the move to Madueke.

Arsenal view Madueke as a young and powerful forward, and they have been tracking him for a number of years.

The club believe he can strengthen their attacking options on both flanks, while the 23-year-old has Premier League experience, too.

Arsenal’s recruitment team were attracted to Madueke’s ability to beat opposing defenders in one-on-one situations, while he also fitted the club’s requirement of having an excellent track record when it comes to injuries.

It is hoped Madueke will settle quickly at his new club given he already knows several players - such as Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice - from England duty.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are advancing in talks to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting in a deal which is expected to cost in excess of £54m plus a further £8.64m in add-ons.

Madueke will follow goalkeeper Kepa in joining the Gunners from Chelsea this summer, and becomes the club’s fourth permanent arrival of the summer after deals for Zubimendi and Norgaard were confirmed earlier this month.
