Nicola Sturgeon's WhatsApps 'to be probed in Covid inquiry'

NICOLA Sturgeon's WhatsApp messages are reportedly up for scrutiny by the official Scottish Covid inquiry.

Politico reported that the inquiry confirmed it was seeking “communications between ministers, officials and advisers relevant to the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference” and suggested this was likely to include the former first minister's WhatsApp messages.

A spokesperson for Sturgeon said she would co-operate fully with the investigation.

“As of yet, Nicola has not received any request for information from the Scottish Covid inquiry," they said. "As with the UK Covid inquiry, Nicola will cooperate fully and provide any and all documentation to help with both inquiries.”

The inquiry sent a series of “do not destroy” letters to the Scottish Government and other organisations to preserve key evidence.

"That notice expressly referred to electronic communications such as WhatsApp messages. The inquiry therefore at an early stage envisaged the potential need to access communications in addition to emails," a spokesperson for the inquiry told Politico.

It comes after Boris Johnson handed his unredacted WhatsApp messages and notebooks to the Cabinet Office after the Government said it did not have the material demanded by the UK-level inquiry.
