Newcastle United star Sven Botman forced to leave Holland camp

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has been sent home from the Holland camp.

The former Lille star has picked up a virus and will play no part in Holland's game against France although a recall for the clash against Gibraltar in Euro 2024 qualifying is still possible This is a big blow for Botman given he had just been recalled to the Dutch senior squad by Ronald Koeman.

Matthijs de Ligt, Cody Gakpo, Joey Veerman and Bart Verbruggen are the other stars to withdraw from the camp due to illness. Newcastle are keeping close tabs on the Botman situation and both the Dutch camp and club medics have been in touch.

Botman has been a mainstay of Howe's team since his big move from Ligue 1 last summer. Koeman is set to reconsider his options once his team have taken on France in their Euro showdown.

A statement from the Dutch FA read: "Sven Botman, Cody Gakpo, Matthijs de Ligt, Joey Veerman and Bart Verbruggen left the training camp of the Dutch national team this morning. They are suffering from a virus infection. After the match against France, the composition of the selection will be reviewed."
