Newcastle United player ratings: Wembley woe for Magpies as star men fail to shine

Newcastle United were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United on a tough afternoon at Wembley.

The Magpies went into the game with injury concerns over Joe Willock and the midfielder was only deemed fit enough to start on the bench. After a steady opening half an hour, Newcastle lost their way after six minutes in which the defence switched off.

Casemiro's header and Marcus Rashford's deflected effort put Man United firmly in control here and Newcastle had a mountain to climb at Wembley. Despite some second half pressure they never really recovered from the first half.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United highlights and reaction

Here's how the players rated overall.

Loris Karius 7

Started steadily with some confidence boosting routine saves. Kept the score down to just 2-0 in the end. Defeat not down to him.

Kieran Trippier 6

Offered something going forward in the first half. Battled hard but will be disappointed with the way Newcastle surrendered before the break.

Fabian Schar 5

Looked shaky after collision. Never really recovered and lost ball a couple of times.

Sven Botman 5

Allowed Rashford to get ahead of him for second goal which he deflected over own keeper. Didn't look comfortable. A massively disappointing day by his standards.

Dan Burn 7

Headed wide in the first half. At least showed a bit of fight.

Sean Longstaff 6

Did not make an impact in the first half and hooked by Howe at the break.

Joelinton 7

Tried to make things happen. One of the better performances at Wembley. Unlucky with late header.

Bruno Guimaraes 5

Blazed over a decent Newcastle chance in the first half. Another to suffer at Wembley.

Allan Saint-Maximin 6

Showed a couple of flashes and offered something. That he was one of Newcastle's more threatening players says it all.

Miguel Almiron 5

Will be devastated but it was not his day on the big stage.

Callum Wilson 5

Didn't manage a shot on target. Not much service and didn't benefit from switch to 4-4-2.

Subs

Alexander Isak 5 (for Longstaff 46)

Didn't manage a shot.

Joe Willock (for Bruno 79)

Jacob Murphy (for Saint-Maximin 79)

Matt Ritchie (for Almiron 90)

Elliot Anderson (for Wilson 90)

Subs must play 15 minutes to earn a mark.

Here's how the players rated at half-time

Loris Karius 6

Started steadily enough with a couple of routine saves. But didn't get close to either first half goal. Big save to deny Weghorst could have kept Newcastle in it.

Kieran Trippier 7

Has found a couple of openings but

Fabian Schar 6

Has looked shaky after collision.

Sven Botman 6

Allowed Rashford to get ahead of him for second goal which he deflected over own keeper. Has not looked comfortable.

Dan Burn 7

Battling hard on a big pitch. Headed wide a decent opening.

Sean Longstaff 6

Has struggled to make an impact in midfield battle so far.

Joelinton 7

Trying to make things happen in the middle.

Bruno Guimaraes 6

Blazed over a decent Newcastle chance.

Allan Saint-Maximin 7

Probably Newcastle's most threatening player but even then has only shown flashes.

Miguel Almiron 5

Yet to really offer anything of note.

Callum Wilson 5

Hasn't threatened, unfortunately. Not much service.
