Newcastle United close to signing Loris Karius as emergency goalkeeper transfer needed

Newcastle United are in advanced talks with former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius following an injury to backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The Magpies have been forced to make the emergency signing just days after the summer transfer window shut.

Karius is on Tyneside to undergo a medical and will pen a short-team deal with Newcastle. Darlow's ankle injury may keep him out of action until early 2023, Chronicle Live understands.

Nick Pope and Mark Gillespie are the only other two senior goalkeepers at the club, while Martin Dubravka was recently loaned to Manchester United. The Slovakian can't be recalled until January.

Karius is a free agent after leaving Liverpool earlier this year. The German stopper spent recent seasons on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin following his infamous Champions League final howler against Real Madrid.

Speaking earlier this summer, the 29-year-old stopper admitted he was on the hunt for a new team: "I took a week's holiday after the season. That was enough for me. Now the focus is on the restart. There's a new challenge coming up," he said.

"I'm ready for it and I'm getting fit now. That's my focus right now. I'm in top shape. I've been training at the highest level all year, with one of the best teams in the world. I've done a lot for myself physically. I've worked a lot on my personality and strengthened myself mentally, that's why I'm I'm excited about what's to come.

"I'm free and I can make my own decisions. This is a new situation that I'm looking forward to. A new challenge is coming up, but that's always a good thing. I'm ready, mentally and physically."

Karius' arrival coincides with Thursday's Premier League squad deadline, as Eddie Howe names his 25-man squad until January.
