New Polestar 4 SUV revealed – and it looks like it finally gets a rear window

Polestar has confirmed that a new SUV version of its Polestar 4 will go on sale from 2 September, bringing extra practicality to the brand’s biggest-selling electric car – and, judging by the first teaser image, what looks like a conventional rear window.

That’s quite a change for a car that’s become famous for doing without one. The existing Polestar 4 coupé uses a roof-mounted camera and a screen where the rear-view mirror would normally sit, leaving drivers unable to look through the back of the car in the usual way.

The new image shows the rear corner of the upcoming Polestar 4 SUV, including what appears to be glass behind the rear doors. Polestar hasn’t yet confirmed full design details, but the picture hints that the more practical version will have a more traditional view out.

The Polestar 4 SUV was first previewed earlier this year, when Polestar boss Michael Lohscheller said the company would combine “the space of an estate and the versatility of an SUV with the dynamic performance that is Polestar”.

Now, the firm has confirmed that the car will sit alongside the existing Polestar 4 coupé rather than replace it. It says the new version will offer “an added layer of flexibility and practicality”, with more versatile storage for family life, holidays and the usual collection of bags, bikes and bits that end up in the back of an SUV.

Polestar hasn’t yet revealed details on boot space, prices or full UK specifications, but it has confirmed that the new model will use the same 400V electric architecture as the latest Polestar 4 coupé.

That means rear-wheel-drive versions will offer up to 391 miles of official range, while dual-motor cars will have up to 536bhp. The current dual-motor Polestar 4 is already the quickest SUV in the company’s line-up, with a 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds in Performance Pack form.

The new SUV will also get revised suspension settings, following recent changes to the Polestar 4 coupé. Polestar says retuned chassis components will give both versions a sportier but more refined driving experience.

The existing Polestar 4 was updated only a few weeks ago with new dampers, springs and anti-roll bars designed to improve ride comfort and steering response. The latest rear motor and dual motor models also brought a simpler trim structure, with new Business, Prime, Comfort and Performance option packs.

Lohscheller said: “Polestar 4 has quickly established itself as a favourite among our customers, and we’ve seen strong demand from drivers who want distinctive design and performance combined with great practicality. With Polestar 4 SUV, we’re building on that success by offering even more versatility, while staying true to the Polestar 4 character. Wrapped in a stunning design, this is a car I’ve been looking forward to sharing with the world.”

The Polestar 4 SUV will be its first production model built in Busan, South Korea, which will also benefit Polestar sales in the US.
