NDRI organises National Workshop on Genome Editing Technologies in Livestock

KARNAL: A 7-day workshop on "Genome Editing Technologies in Livestock" was organised at ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal. A total of 43 participants from several institutions across the country.

NDRI Director Dheer Singh said that genome editing has emerged as a ground-breaking technology that enables the targeted modification of animal genetics to produce desired traits.

He said that the objective of this national workshop was to provide a comprehensive platform for technical and scientific exchange, fostering the enhancement of skills and knowledge among students, researchers, and scientists.

Singh said that the specific focus was on the application of genome editing in livestock that holds immense potential for improving animal production, enhancing disease resistance, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Prof. Wilfried A. Kues, a distinguished faculty from the FLU-Institute of Farm Animal Genetics in Germany, was a key contributor, sharing his insights in this specialized field.

Former Advisor, Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi, A.K. Rawat, emphasized the vital role of such workshop programs in equipping researchers with essential skills and projected that the workshop would substantially contribute to advancing expertise in genome editing.

He underlined the urgent need for a skilled workforce in genome editing to drive developments in livestock enhancement, disease management, and therapeutic innovations.

Dheer Singh, NDRI's Director, emphasized the pivotal role of genome editing tools in meeting challenges across human and animal development in the forthcoming decades.

He highlighted NDRI's proactive role in harnessing genome editing tools for the betterment of dairy animal production and health. Reflecting on the workshop's success.

Rajan Sharma, JD(R), highlighted its role in empowering the workforce with proficiency in advanced technologies, contributing to the country's scientific growth.

Manoj Kumar Singh and Naresh Selokar, the workshop coordinators, put their full efforts for imparting the knowledge of genome editing methods to the participants.
