Mum advised to 'go to Travelodge' after seeing mother-in-law's sleeping arrangements

Christmas is often spent surrounded by your closest friends and family, and while it can be a tight and uncomfortable squeeze the main thing is having everyone together.

However, a woman online has fumed that her in-laws have overstepped the boundaries with their sleeping arrangements during their Christmas visit. Sharing her anger to popular forum Mumsnet, users have encouraged the upset mum to ditch the family celebrations and go to her local Travelodge.

She wrote: "This sleeping arrangement is ridiculous, right? We arrived at my in-laws today and are staying for a week. Sister-in-law also arrived today and is staying for two nights," she explained.

The mum went on: "We live much further away so we have two long visits a year and then two weekend visits. Sister-in-love visits and stays for a night every month.

"We have a 21-month-old, and he sleeps in a travel cot when we visit. Sister-in-law has a five-year-old.

"Parents-in-law have four bedrooms. One bedroom is obviously theirs. Then there is a double room with a double bed and then two singles with single beds in them. Usually, when sister-in-law visits, her five-year-old sleeps in the double bed and she is in one of the single rooms.

"When we visit, the three of us are in a double room, with husband and I in the double bed and our son next to us in his travel cot."

She continued: "This is the first time we are all staying at the same time (with children). Sister-in-law is insisting that her child gets the double room as per usual because that is what he is used to and he won't be able to sleep anywhere else.

"I've said it makes sense for us to have the double room seeing as all three of us can sleep in there, there's space for the travel cot and then sister-in-law and her child can sleep in each of the single rooms."

However, the woman's sister-in-law refused to cooperate as she insisted that her five-year-old got the double bed to himself despite it being easier for the family of three to take.

The woman said: "She has refused to budge and parents-in-law agree that her son should get the double room because that's where he always sleeps and he won’t sleep well otherwise."

Following the awkward confrontation, the woman explained that family agree that the five-year-old has a double room and a bed to himself white the mum has a single room to herself.

This left the Mumsnet user with the single bed with her son in the travel cot next to her and her husband kicked onto the sofa.

However, she admits that her husband "doesn’t like fuss so is fine with the arrangement".

Seeking advice over the peculiar ordeal, the woman wrote: "I know I am not being unreasonable because it makes no sense whatsoever that son and I are in a tiny room with husband on the sofa when a five-year-old has a big room to himself.

"But equally, when sister-in-law and parents-in-law and even husband think it’s fine, I can't help but doubt myself," she added.

Taking to the comments, one savage Mumsnet user wrote: "I'd have got back in the car and left tbh…"

"I'd be in the nearest Travelodge or on my way home," another agreed.

A third penned: "That is completely insane and I would tell them to give you the double or you are leaving. A five-year-old can sleep perfectly well in a single bed."
