Mizoram earn easy win in sub-junior women’s national hockey championship

Mizoram began their campaign at the Hockey India Sub-junior Women’s National Championship on a winning note as they convincingly beat Bihar 7-0 in their Group H encounter at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal on Thursday.

In the other matches of the day Tamil Nadu earned a narrow 1-0 win over Arunachal while Karnataka thrashed Telangana 15-0 in the last match of the day. Meanwhile, Himachal forfeited their Group G game against Punjab.

Earlier in the day, Lal Tlanchhungi scored a hat-trick as the team from the northeast won the third game of the day at ease. Mang Lawmsang opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute and five minutes later F Lalbiaksiami made it 2-0. The second quarter belonged completely to Tlanchhungi as she scored twice in the 20th minute and once in the 27th to complete her hat-trick.

Despite Mizoram’s dominance, they were unable to score any goals in the third quarter as Bihar did just enough to hold on. However, Bihar’s defence was breached once against in the last quarter as Lalbiaksiami scored her second of the match in the 46th minute to make it 6-0. With four minutes left on the clock, captain Lalrinpuii also got her name on the scoresheet and the match finished 7-0.

As for the last match of the day between Karnataka and Telangana in Group H, the scoreboard never stopped ticking as they scored five in the first quarter, two in the second, six in the third and two more in the second.

Yamuna top-scored with four goals while Rakshitha J scored a hat-trick. Both skipper Disha Ponnamma Mu and Disha M netted a brace each and Sowmya Hv, Rashmi M, Bollamma Pm and Likitha PJ sounded the board once as Telangana were impressed by their opponents.

However, the opening game of the day between Tamil Nadu and Arunachal in Group F was a closely fought encounter. But Anusuya’s strike in the 28th minute made all the difference and Tamil Nadu grabbed the three points on offer.

On Friday, Bengal will take on Jammu & Kashmir in the first match of the day. It will be followed by the match between Chhattisgarh and Gujarat. The remaining two matches will see Madhya Pradesh take on Uttarakhand and Assam face off against Maharashtra.
