Australians have endured a mixed opening day in the first round of qualifying for next week's US Open in New York.

Both men in action on Tuesday ahead of the year's final grand slam at Flushing Meadows were beaten in straight sets.

World No.134 Aleksandar Vukic lost 7-5 6-4 to American Zachary Svajda, ranked 172 players below the Sydneysider, in 95 minutes while Marc Polmans was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7-2) by Francesco Passaro of Italy.

Better news in the women's draw with three Aussie victories.

Maddison Inglis enjoyed a 7-5 3-6 7-6 (10-8) success over Georgian Ekaterine Gorgodze.

The 25-year-old from Perth slugged it out for nearly three hours before claiming victory while Kimberly Birrell needed only 69 minutes to defeat Emina Bektas of the United States 6-4 6-2.

Inglis will play American Valerie Glozman next while Birrell takes on Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

"I don't feel like it was the prettiest tennis out there," Inglis told tennis.com.au.

"She's a really tough competitor, lost to her a couple of times in long matches. And I know she's going to compete every point, so I'm really happy I was able to get through it, just, at the end."

Inglis came through three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw at Wimbledon two months ago.

"I haven't played much since Wimbledon, spent a little bit of time at home not very well, so it's good to be back," she added.

"Had a couple of good matches and wins in Vancouver ... a win's a win, and always good to start a grand slam with a win. So I'm excited."

Seone Mendez was trailing 2-6 1-3 when she was forced to retire against Clara Burel but Astra Sharma dug deep to see off another Frenchwoman in Jessika Ponchet.

Sharma, who successfully qualified for last year's US Open, blew four match points in the third-set tiebreaker and lost five consecutive points before recovering to take it at her fifth attempt and progress 1-6 6-1 7-6 (12-10).

Max Purcell, Priscilla Hon and Lizette Cabrera get their qualifying campaigns underway on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).
