Millions of Sky and BT broadband customers to face huge internet shake-up

Millions of households across the UK will soon be switched over to much faster, full-fibre speeds as ageing copper connectivity becomes phased out.

Installer and supplier Openreach has announced that it no longer wants to give Internet Service Providers across Great Britain like BT, Sky and TalkTalk the option of serving consumers with old and outdated copper connections - which struggle to keep up with the ever growing evolution of digital technology.

For those who aren't tech-savvy, newer-age Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connections are able to provide much faster speeds in excess of 900Mbps, as opposed to the maximum 70Mbps ballpark that inferior copper wires can host.

The Mirror reports that with a digital revolution seeing more households streaming movies, playing video games and working from home - with routers crammed with internet-sapping devices galore - the boost makes a massive difference. So it's a no brainer that Openreach wishes to switch homes over to full-fibre.

The firm has confirmed that as of next year, 119 new locations across the UK will no longer have the option to access plans which include the old and stagnant technology. This applies not only to completely new customers signing up for the first time, but also to people who are switching, upgrading or renewing their service.

It's great news in terms of speed and reliability, but it does mean that new cables will have to be drilled through your walls. Upgrading your service can also often be incredibly more expensive also.

For example, Sky currently has a deal which offers users basic speeds for as little as £17 per month for the rest of the year - where as those hoping for 900Mbps downloads will fork out £56 per month. That's a difference of £39.

Along with breaking the news of the switchover, Openreach has also listed all of the locations to be hit by changes - as well as a postcode checker to see if you can get full-fibre in your street.

Here's the full list of places that are stopping copper connections from next year:
