Microsoft planning to cut thousands of jobs worldwide

Microsoft is planning on slashing tens of thousands of jobs globally.

In another massive blow to the tech industry, the multi-million dollar company, which employs around 3,500 people in Ireland, will be reportedly cutting 5% of its workforce across the world. This includes jobs in human resources and engineering divisions.

The news comes as the tech industry has suffered major job losses after big names like Twitter and Meta let thousands of staff go over the last few months due to the worsening economy worldwide. Microsoft is looking to slash around 11,000 jobs of its 221,000 full-time staff globally.

The software and PC giant laid off a small number of employees in July last year. Later, the company cut 1,000 jobs, Axios reported in October last year.

After sales plummeted for Windows and Microsoft devices, Microsoft is working to maintain growth rates at its cloud unit Azure. In other news, Amazon announced it will be slashing more than 18,000 jobs including some positions in Europe.

CEO Andy Jassy in a statement to staff that the affected workers will be informed today. Additionally, tech firm Intel have offered manufacturing staff at their Kildare plant voluntary "short-term layoffs" as the company cuts costs.

Kildare TD James Lawless said the job cuts were down to global factors and played down any loss in confidence in the Leixlip plant.
