Matt Preston Reveals The Worst Dish He Ate As A Judge On MasterChef Australia

Beloved MasterChef Australia OG judge Matt Preston has spilled on the worst dish he had to eat on the cooking show, surprisingly admitting that some of the worst things that have graced his taste buds came from chefs rather than contestants.

Heading to the 2026 Logie Awards for SBS’ The Hospital: In The Deep End, Preston opened up about his remarkably memorable tenure as MasterChef Australia judge.

From 2009 to 2019, alongside George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan, Preston brought some memorable quotes, outfits and episodes that featured guests like King Charles and the Dalai Lama.

But of course, Preston was remembered for his blunt delivery during taste tests.

Speaking to PEDESTRIAN.TV on the Logies Red Carpet, Preston shared the worst dishes. Of course, one of the dishes mentioned was Andrew Ursini‘s strawberry risotto from season one.

“There was a strawberry risotto that was pretty bad,” Preston told PEDESTRIAN.TV.

“There was a dish, and we were on the road in the Barossa, and someone literally took everything in the pantry and put it into a stir fry, and it was disgusting.”

In a wild admission, Preston revealed that some of the worst dishes were from chefs. Unfortunately, for us gossip chasers, the culinary big dog didn’t spill the names.

“Actually, probably the two worst dishes were not contestants’; they were chefs’ dishes,” he dished.

“One chef decided to blend a smoothie using lamb brain. So, not only did you see the brain go vwoop, but also it had that strange pink-grey colour of brains which — having been in a number of different brain surgeries in The Hospital — kind of brought that all back. Not good.

“And the other one was a dish with Vegemite that just tasted. It’s the only time I remember producers saying, ‘Could you find something good to say about this dish?’ and we went, ‘No.'”

Would Matt Preston return to MasterChef Australia?

While we’ll always remember Preston for his legendary run on the culinary competition show, Preston shared he has no plans to return to MasterChef Australia.

“I think the guys they’ve got now do an amazing job,” he shared.

“I’ve got other stuff to do. I’ve got a show on SBS at the moment, Plating Locally. I made The Hospital, which was a real challenge, but it was a really good thing to do.

“I kind of came out really sensing that I actually learned some shit from that, and I kind of — it answered some questions for me.”

While The Hospital didn’t win a Logie in this year’s run, one thing is that Preston has won our hearts for his contributions to Aussie TV and pop culture.
