Matt LaFleur Addresses Jordan Love Becoming Starting QB

Ever since the Packers selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, Green Bay fans knew the day would come when Jordan Love would take the reigns and become the franchise’s new starting quarterback. With the imminent Aaron Rodgers trade to the Jets, that day seems like it’s finally near.

When talking to reporters Tuesday at the annual league meetings in Phoenix, coach Matt LaFleur addressed the impending change under center and wanted to be clear that he doesn’t have unrealistic expectations for his new starting signal-caller.

“It’s going to be a different role for him, certainly, and I think we all have to kind of temper our expectations for him,” LaFleur said, per NFL Network. “It’s different when you’re going into a game versus when you’re starting a game. It’s going to be a process, but it’s gonna be exciting for him, for us.”

As of now, LaFleur and Love—along with the rest of the NFL—are patiently waiting for a deal to get done between the Packers and Jets for a trade centered around Rodgers. Waiting isn’t new for Love, who has been waiting to get on the field since Green Bay called his name on draft night nearly three years ago.

“I think he just wanted to know what was going on,” LaFleur said of Love and the young quarterback’s awareness of the offseason saga involving Rodgers. “For a long period of time, I couldn’t tell him because I didn’t quite know where it was headed. I think there’s obviously some clarity to it, but nothing’s final yet.”
