Marko Arnautovic's agent claims player turned down Manchester United transfer

Marko Arnautovic's agent has claimed that it was the striker who rejected a move to Old Trafford, rather than Manchester United pulling out of the deal.

The Reds were linked with a surprising move for the former West Ham and Stoke City forward in the summer transfer window - with reports claiming that United had a £7.5million bid rejected by Bologna for the 33-year-old.

United's interest in the player was met by widespread criticism from former players and supporters, which led the Reds to withdraw their interest in the Austrian attacker.

However, the player's agent, Tiziano Pasquali, has claimed that it was his client who rejected the move to Old Trafford as he wanted to remain in Italy - claiming that Juventus were also interested in the forward.

"Yes, Juventus and Manchester United had come forward," Pasquali told Gianluca di Marzio. "From the English we had received a written proposal, and the negotiations had continued even after some contrary opinions from their fans.

"But in the end, it was Marko who chose not to drag it out too long and to stay at Bologna. How can you think that he is now in a bad way?"

Arnautovic, who left the Premier League for China in 2019, enjoyed an impressive campaign in Italy last term, scoring 14 goals for Bologna. United's interest in the player came before Antony made the switch from Ajax, and while Cristiano Ronaldo was pushing for an exit in search of Champions League football.

However, Erik ten Hag's attacking players have made a promising start to the new season, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Antony all in good form in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Arnautovic has continued to deliver for Bologna and has scored six goals in nine Serie A games this season so far, also registering an assist.
