Marcus Rashford's late winner sparks VAR controversy as rival fans fume

Manchester United's late win over West Ham was marred by controversy after Marcus Rashford's goal stood despite shouts for offside.

Edinson Cavani appeared to be in an offside position prior to teeing up the 24-year-old to fire home with just under 30 seconds remaining of stoppage time.

For Rashford, it was his second goal in as many matches after coming off the bench to add a third during the midweek win over Brentford.

After the VAR check, United's goal stood and saw all three points go to the hosts as they moved into the Champions League places after three months.

But the decision left many fans angry as the Video Assistant Referee adjudged the Uruguayan to be onside in the build-up to the winning goal with the images appearing to show him seemingly stray into an offside position.

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere was amongst the disgruntled fans looking on.

The defeat for David Moyes' side sees them relinquish fourth spot to Ralf Rangnick's side as they slip to fifth. Spurs and Arsenal are breathing down the necks of the Hammers and the Reds with both north London sides having games in hand.

But for United fans, offside or not, they couldn't help take the news in jest and rub salt into the wounds of their rivals.

It was an evenly matched clash but the winning goal saw all three of the United substitutes; Anthony Martial, Cavani and Rashford combined to send the Reds back in the European mix after securing successive wins.

The Reds enjoy a break from Premier League action in their next clash as they welcome Middlesbrough to Old Trafford in the FA Cup on February 4, before a trip to Turf Moor four days later.
