IMPHAL: The state assembly on Friday unanimously resolved to establish the population commission of the state and also to introduce and enforce the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The development came after a private members’ resolution was moved by legislator Kh Joykishan Singh on the last day of the second session of the 12th Manipur legislative assembly.
On another private members’ resolution, moved by MLA Kh Ibomcha Singh, the House also resolved to reaffirm the resolution passed on August 1, 2002 urging the Centre to record “Sanamahi Religion” in the census report and also allot separate code number of the religion in the Census operation.
Earlier, chief minister N Biren Singh said the resolutions moved by the two members are in the interest of the members of the House.
Legislator K Meghachandra supported the resolution moved by Ibomcha, and said it is the need of the hour in the interest of those people following Sanamahi religion.
Last month, two prominent apex civil bodies of Manipur had urged the state legislators to adopt a decision during the monsoon assembly session to set up a state population commission and prepare NRC.
