Manchester United vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after hosts edge narrow win

Man Utd vs Newcastle LIVE - (REUTERS)

Manchester United vs Newcastle LIVE

Manchester United produced a valiant defensive performance as they edged out a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Friday. Patrick Dorgu scored on the volley before the break with his first goal for the club, and it proved the winner after a frenetic second-half. The Magpies heaped on the pressure as the clock wound down and created bountiful chances, but could not bundle one over the line.

It is a sorely needed three points for United, who move fifth in the Premier League, but Newcastle’s struggles on the road persist. It is an even greater boost for United given the raft of first-team absentees: Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui were all absent either with injuries or due to AFCON.

Dorgu followed his sweetly-hit opener with a gritty defensive showing which fully complemented his team-mates’ battling defensive showing. Newcastle, though, will need some introspection on the long journey back to the north-east after they dominated the game in the second-half but failed to really test Senne Lammens. Catch up with the action as it happened below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis.

Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle

KICK-OFF! Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle

20:00 , Arthur Ferridge

Boxing Day football is underway at Old Trafford!

Nearly time to go

19:54 , Arthur Ferridge

The players are out at Old Trafford - kick-off is imminent!

Team news reminder

19:50 , Arthur Ferridge

With just ten minutes left until kick-off, here’s a reminder of tonight’s XIs.

Man United: Lammens; Dalot, Martinez, Heaven, Mount, Cunha, Dorgu, Casemiro, Shaw, Ugarte, Sesko

Newcastle: Ramsdale; Hall, Schar, Tonali, Gordon, Thiaw, Murphy, Woltemade, Bruno, Ramsey, Miley

Eyes on AFCON

19:46 , Arthur Ferridge

A reminder that Manchester United’s Noussair Mazraoui will be playing simultaneously with his United team-mates this evening.

His Morocco side take on Mali at 8pm - and he has been named to the starting XI.

Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma starts opposite him.

You can follow that clash on Channel 4!

Man United bench

19:42 , Arthur Ferridge

Ruben Amorim does not have much in the way of experience on the bench.

He has three 18-year-olds in Shea Lacey and the twins Jack and Tyler Fletcher.

They are joined by Leny Yoro and Tyler Fredricson, both 20, and Bendito Mantato is still just 17!

How to cope without Fernandes

19:35 , Arthur Ferridge

Man United face a unique challenge tonight: how to cope without Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese has been ever-present since signing, but is now facing several weeks on the sidelines with an injury.

But how do they make up for his creativity and his leadership?

Of United’s 31 league goals this season, he has either scored or assisted 12 of them. That’s 38 per cent!

He will be sorely missed...

Nick Woltemade

19:31 , Arthur Ferridge

Few would have seen it coming at the start of the season, but Nick Woltemade has done an admirable job of replacing Alexander Isak.

In the Premier League alone, he already has seven goals and one assist in 14 appearances.

He will hope to build on that record at Old Trafford tonight.

30 minute warning!

19:30 , Arthur Ferridge

Kick-off is just half an hour away!

Newcastle away from home

19:27 , Arthur Ferridge

Newcastle’s form this season is rather interesting for one key reason: they are hopeless away from home.

They sit eleventh in the table overall, but if only away matches were counted, they would be 15th.

In eight matches away from home this season, they have taken just six points.

Lisandro Martinez returns

19:22 , Arthur Ferridge

Lisandro Martinez starts today, returning to the starting XI for the first time since sustaining an ACL tear against Crystal Palace in February.

Last time out

19:18 , Arthur Ferridge

Both Man United and Newcastle dropped points last time out.

United visited Aston Villa and came away with a 2-1 defeat, courtesy of a stunning brace from Morgan Rogers.

Newcastle, meanwhile, hosted Chelsea and took a 2-0 lead into half-time but ultimately drew 2-2.

Man United arrive at Old Trafford

Newcastle team news

19:03 , Arthur Ferridge

A curious lineup from Howe today.

Lewis Hall returns in a boost for the Magpies, though Joelinton is only fit enough for the bench, which features three academy hopefuls in Shahar, Neave, and Alabi.

Nick Pope joins them on the bench, with Aaron Ramsdale continuing between the sticks.

Lewis Miley is back in the XI, too, likely reprising his role as a makeshift full-back.

Man United team news

18:55 , Arthur Ferridge

No major surprises for United here. It does seem to be a back three as expected, while Mainoo misses out with injury again.

Dorgu and Dalot will take up the wing-back roles.

Zirkzee is named to the bench despite being heavily linked with a January transfer.

Tyrell Malacia makes the bench for the seventh consecutive match, and could make his first competitive appearance of the season today.

Team news coming up...

18:41 , Arthur Ferridge

Lineups will be released momentarily!

Wissa in the fold?

18:37 , Arthur Ferridge

Yoane Wissa has barely featured for Newcastle since making a big-money move from Brentford in the summer.

He was sidelined with an injury mere days after joining up, and finally scored his first goal for the club in last week’s Carabao Cup defeat of Fulham.

And now he’s ready to make up for lost time.

He told Sky Sports: "There's more to come for sure. As I said, I'm not in a perfect peak yet. It's going to take a few weeks to build up and I know I've got a step to achieve.

"But I know who I am. I'm a hard worker. I love playing football. And yes, I hope I'm going to score many goals here. And I know I'm not 100 per cent, but there's more to come for sure.

"I hope I score a lot of goals, a lot of assists and a lot of wins. This is what we need now. We need a big momentum now as the season is getting tougher and tougher.

"We need a big momentum and for myself, a lot of goals and happy moments. This is just what I need now.”

Could he feature at Old Trafford today?

A chance for Kobbie?

18:30 , Arthur Ferridge

Ruben Amorim has come in for considerable criticism for his use of Kobbie Mainoo this season.

The youngster, a fan favourite, has barely featured for United despite the side’s poor results.

Asked whether Mainoo could feature today as a stopgap for AFCON absentees, this is what Amorim had to say...

"Kobbie Mainoo will have the opportunity he has all the time.

"He played in different positions - we talked about the position of Casemiro, he can do that. If you play with a three, he can play like we did in the last game with the position of Mason Mount, he can play there.

"He is going to be the future of Manchester United, that is my feeling, he just needs to wait for his chance and everything can change in football in two days."

Man United vs Newcastle head to head

18:22 , Arthur Ferridge

Newcastle have a brilliant recent record against Manchester United, and they will be confident of picking up at least a point on their travels today.

Manchester United wins: 92

Newcastle United wins: 48

Draws: 41

Why is there only one Boxing Day game?

18:14 , Arthur Ferridge

Fans up and down the country will miss the usual swathe of Boxing Day matches this year.

United vs Newcastle is the only match on the bill, but why?

The trimmed festive schedule is intended to combat fixture congestion brought on by the newly expanded Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League formats.

The fact that Christmas fell on a Thursday also inspired the change, with most matches simply bumped to Saturday.

Boxing Day football

18:06 , Arthur Ferridge

It seems a shame there is only one Boxing Day match in the Premier League this year.

There is plenty of AFCON and EFL action to keep you entertained, though.

The programme at Old Trafford, though, knows where most eyes will be drawn...

AFCON involvement

17:58 , Arthur Ferridge

Man United will be without Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui today as all three represent their nations at AFCON.

Diallo and Mbeumo, representing the Ivory Coast and Cameroon respectively, both won their first AFCON outings 1-0, but being groupmates, will face one another on Sunday.

Mazraoui, on the other hand, will play simultaneously to his team-mates tonight as Morocco face Mali.

Standard Sport prediction: Honours even

17:50 , Arthur Ferridge

Both sides are struggling coming into this fixture, but Newcastle have won five of their last six games against Manchester United and no Fernandes massively weakens Amorim's team.

But with Newcastle depleted so much in defence because of injuries, it seems very unlikely that the Red Devils will not at least score once at Old Trafford.

With a metaphorical hangover for both sides after Christmas, it would be no surprise to see a draw between them.

Draw, 1-1.

Newcastle early team news: Absentees aplenty

17:45 , Arthur Ferridge

Newcastle are in the middle of an injury crisis, with their defence being hit especially badly. Nick Pope could be back and Sven Botman is getting better, but Dan Burn, Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier are all definitely ruled out.

Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles and William Osula are all also out.

(Getty Images)

Man United early team news: Fernandes out

17:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Manchester United will be without their captain Bruno Fernandes after he picked up a rare injury against Aston Villa. It is thought a hamstring issue could rule him out for up to a month.

Harry Maguire has a thigh injury and is not expected back until early January, while Matthijs de Ligt has a back issue and will not return for this one.

Kobbie Mainoo is in contention to get more game time now that Fernandes is injured, but he has unfortunately picked up a small calf injury and will likely not feature again in 2025.

Casemiro is back from suspension, but Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui are all away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
