Manchester United make decision on Dylan Levitt's future

Manchester United have triggered the one-year extension in Dylan Levitt's contract following an exceptional season on loan with Dundee United.

Levitt, 21, was entering the final month of his contract but United have taken up their option of an additional year to tie the midfielder to the club until 2023 and will make a decision on whether he stays for the remainder of his contract or departs for a fee to gain the first-team playing time he is evidently ready for.

It comes the day after Levitt put in a coming of age performance for Wales in their Nations League defeat to Poland — his 11th appearance at senior international level.

Levitt spent this season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Dundee United where he established himself as one of their most important players.

The United youngster played 29 times and netted six goals as he won the club’s Fans Player of the Year award and helped Dundee United qualify for European competition for the first time in 10 years.

Levitt had significant interest from England and Scotland to sign him on a free transfer if he were to leave this summer, and interest still remains high as he re-enters his final year at the club.

Levitt is aware that he needs to continue playing regular first team football to push onto the next level, but he now feels confident of playing at a high level after his successful loan in Scotland. The youngster acknowledges the challenge of breaking into the United first-team under Erik ten Hag next season and accepts he might have to do what is best for his career next season if he is to fulfil his dream of playing an important role for Wales at the World Cup, if they qualify this weekend.

Levitt has been viewed as a long-term successor to Joe Allen at international level and could be a wildcard candidate to face Ukraine in the World Cup play-off match on Sunday following his exceptional display against Poland on Wednesday evening.

It is understood Levitt will work through a devised fitness plan over the summer in order to return for next season in the best shape possible.

Club figures have praised Levitt for his dedication and professionalism at such a young age. Last summer, he cut short his holidays and only gave himself one week off after the European Championship so that he could make an impression in pre-season for United.

The Welshman joined United at the age of eight and made his senior debut for the club when they faced Astana in the Europa League back in 2019.
