Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney finds it 'strange' that Man City's 2012 title win hasn't been questioned

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has revealed that he finds it "strange" that Manchester City's dramatic 3-2 win over QPR to clinch their maiden Premier League title back in 2012 has never been questioned.

Rooney made the admission exactly 10 years on from when City clinched their first Premier League crown in the most dramatic and pulsating way imaginable. Trailing 2-1 on the final day at the Etihad Stadium as the contest entered second-half stoppage time, City scored twice to secure the title and snatch it out of the hands of cross-city rivals United, who thought they had done enough with a 1-0 win at Sunderland.

Edin Dzeko brought City level in the second minute of stoppage time, planting a firm header past QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, before Sergio Aguero scored, arguably, the most iconic Premier League goal ever just two minutes later. It sparked scenes at the Etihad that nobody is likely to ever forget.

However, Rooney, who had scored the goal at Sunderland that everyone thought would be enough to clinch the title, has admitted he finds it hard to understand why the nature of City's win has never been questioned. He believes QPR gifted the ball straight back to Roberto Mancini's side from the kick-off that followed Dzeko's equaliser.

"Paddy Kenny should have done better for a couple of the goals," Rooney told The Sun. "City get the second goal and QPR kick it straight back to them and that's never been questioned - I find that strange.

"Djibril Cisse celebrating after the game with the City players, but yes, listen, it's a historic moment in the Premier League so I'm sure that, if you are not involved as a Manchester United player, that's probably one of the greatest moments in the league."

On Friday, to mark the 10th anniversary of Aguero's title-winning strike, City unveiled a statue of the Argentine outside the Etihad Stadium. The statue was of him racing away to celebrate.

On the unveiling of the statue, Aguero, who won five Premier League titles during his time with City, said: "Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving. In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.

"I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special."
