When the MEN asks Frankie Tan if she wants to feature on I Work in Town, she laughs.
Hysterically. The 22-year-old is working the till at Feel Good Club, the café and events space in Northern Quarter. Eventually, after regaining her composure, she agrees — once her shift finishes in 10 minutes.
So the team return, and chat to Frankie, who was born in the Philippines, but moved to Sunderland when she was still a baby. She has a Mackem lilt, and youthful, hopeful outlook on life.

Manchester is her adopted home, she says, as she delves into what makes her tick. Here is the full interview.
Where’s your favourite hidden gem?
This & That, the little Indian place. It’s the best place ever, it’s so nice there.
What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?
It’s from Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop, with the flats going over the top. I like looking out, and I have loads of memories with my friends thinking ‘this city is great’.
Do you like the fact it’s getting taller?
I’ve not really thought about that before. So long as the buildings look nice!
Where’s best to go for your dinner in town?
Go Falafel. I love it, it’s just there for me.
Where would you take someone to show them the real Manchester?
I think the Northern Quarter has everything. It’s got hidden gems, artsy stuff — that’s what me and my friends enjoy doing the most.
What’s your favourite Mancunian neighbourhood?
Chorlton. It’s just nice vibes. Everyone is really happy and there are good charity shops.
What are the five words that best describe the city?
Diverse, welcoming, there’s a freedom of no judgement — you can do whatever you want. It’s artsy, and it’s home.

I’m not a fan of either!
Your favourite city pub is…?
It’s by Ramona, Bar Fringe. There’s loads of little knick knacks in there.
What’s the one change you'd make to Manchester if you could…
I don’t think there is anything I would change. I’d like more green space, in the city centre we have Piccadilly Gardens that’s always congested. Outside town is fine.
