Gardai are awaiting the outcome of a post mortem to determine the course of an investigation into the death of a man following an alleged assault in Drogheda.

The man, named locally as Brian Reynolds, in his 40s, was allegedly attacked by a number of men armed with hammers on Thursday evening.

The thugs broke into the property Mr Reynolds was staying at in Rathmullan Park in the Co Louth town.

Mr Reynolds, who owned Kits Stop N Shop in the Rathmullen Park area of Drogheda, was allegedly savagely beaten by the thugs.

Mr Reynolds was discovered with serious injuries in the property at approximately 7.30pm on Thursday, December 22.

He was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in the town where he sadly passed away on Saturday night, December 24.

The alleged attack is believed to have been linked to the discovery of a large quantity of stolen cigarettes in the town earlier in the week.

In a statement to The Star, Gardai confirmed they are investigating “all of the circumstances of the death of a man who was discovered with serious injuries on Thursday, December 22 and subsequently passed away on Saturday, December 24.”

The statement continued: “He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda where he passed away on the evening of Saturday 24th December 2022.

“The office of the State Pathologist and local Coroner have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be conducted on Monday, the results of which will assist in determining the course of the investigation.

A full technical examination of the scene at Rathmullan Park has been conducted by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.

Gardai are now appealing for anyone with information that can assist with the investigation to come forward.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 9874200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
