Man dressed as an old woman throws cake at Mona Lisa portrait

In a shocking incident, a man dressed as an old woman threw a piece of cake at the famous Mona Lisa portrait on May 29, 2022 at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. Fortunately, the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci has a glass covering which protects it from any damage. And so, the attack just left some cake smeared on its glass which was later cleaned by the guards.

As per the videos posted on social media, a man dressed up as an old lady arrived in the museum sitting on a wheelchair. Eyewitnesses in reports said that the man initially tried to destroy the case where the portrait is kept for display. When he couldn't damage the case, he threw a cake on it and then smeared it on the glass. The unidentified man also threw rose petals in the gallery.

When the security guards rushed to escort the man away, he shouted at people to think about planet Earth. "There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this,” the man said, as per a report by AP.

It's noted that this isn't the first time when someone tried to destroy Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece. In the 1950s, the lower part of Mona Lisa's portrait was damaged in an acid attack. That's why the painting has since been kept in a glass case.
