Man arrested on suspicion of money laundering after cops found £40k stashed in car during 'routine stop'

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of money laundering after finding £40,000 stashed in his car.

Officers made the discovery during a 'routine stop' on on Harris Street, Strangeways on Wednesday night (March 29). The cash was found in a box on the back seat of the car, and the man, aged 34, remains in police custody for questioning.

The stop was made as part of Operation Vulcan, a multi-agency initiative to tackle crime in the Cheetham Hill and Strangeways areas. Police said the incident was 'another example of why relentless policing in the area is so important'.

Sergeant Dan Cullum, one of Operation Vulcan’s specialist officers said: “This arrest is another example of why relentless policing in the area is so important as another routine stop search has resulted in large sums of suspected dirty cash being seized.

“These shops are turning over thousands of pounds worth of profit every day, all of which is being funnelled into serious organised crime and funding drugs, weapons, trafficking, and exploitation in the area and across the region.

“Let this be a warning, our presence will not subside until every last bit of criminality has gone.”
