- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched a new initiative called the Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE) to evaluate the city's finances and improve government operations.
- Mamdani stated that COGE aims to make the city government “work smarter, faster, and more effectively for working people” and will hold hearings across all five boroughs.
- The initiative draws parallels to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk during the Trump administration, which aimed to cut government waste.
- DOGE resulted in the removal of over 300,000 federal workers and contractors and was widely unpopular, with nearly half of voters believing it cut too much.
- COGE will be chaired by Patrick Gaspard, a former executive director of the Democratic National Committee, with its first public hearing scheduled for 9 June.
