Maharashtra: Five members of a family drowned in water-filled quarry in Dombivli

KALYAN: A 55-year old woman, her daughter-in- law and three grandsons drowned in a water-filled quarry at Sandap village near Dombivli.

The woman with her daughter- in- law and grandson had gone to the quarry to wash clothes.

The fire brigade team recovered all five bodies and sent them to Shastri Nagar hospital in Dombivli for post mortem.

The deceased were identified as Mira Gaikwad (55), her daughter-in- law Apeksha (30) and three grandsons Mayuresh (15), Moksha (13) and Nilesh (15).

The incident occurred around 4pm at Sandap village which comes under 27 villages in Kalyan, when the woman and her family members had gone to the quarry to wash clothes.

According to police, the woman and her daughter-in law were busy in cleaning cloth when Moksha who was sitting on bank of quarry slipped and fell into the quarry, after which his brothers and both women jumped into the water to save her. But all five drowned.

The locals who witnessed incident informed to local Manpada police after which fire brigade team was called search them.

A senior police official at Manpada police station said all the bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem. A process of registering an accidental death is going on at police station.
