A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture on Wednesday, registering an intensity of upper 5 on Japan’s seismic scale of 0 to 7. The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed the quake’s epicentre near Okinawa Main Island, as reported by Japanese public broadcaster NHK. No tsunami warning has been issued.
Tremors rippled across multiple areas, rattling residents. Some reports placed the magnitude slightly higher, at 6.2. No deaths, injuries or major structural damage were immediately reported.
The latest tremor follows a magnitude 7.7 quake off northern Japan in April, which triggered elevated warnings of a potential mega-quake along coastal regions.

A fresh earthquake of magnitude 4.7 also struck near southern Iran on Wednesday, just hours after earlier seismic activity in the region, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The quake was recorded at a depth of 14 km (8.7 miles), indicating a relatively shallow tremor that could be felt across nearby areas.
